KOH KER JUNGLE TOURS

Koh Ker Temple Complex is 120 kilometres outside of Siem Reap and was the capital of the Cambodian Empire in the 10th century.  We have been bringing guests here since 2001. In 2003, we established a base in Koh Ker Village, and in 2008 we built a traditional wooden house on stilts called Koh Ker Jungle Lodge with balconies overlooking the main temple. In 2016, we built a rustic wooden house, four kilometres away from Koh Ker Village, with balconies overlooking the surrounding tall forest and the river that flows beside it. Both of these are accommodation options on your tour.

Day 1 : Siem Reap-Koh Ker Temple

We travel through villages and visit one family home to sample their local rice whiskey, see mats weaved from coconut leaves, and taste palm sugar. We sample fresh palm juice, collected in front of our eyes and, if in season, we can partake in harvesting rice!  We stop at ancient Beng Melea temple with its hanging ferns, floating butterflies, galleries and very few tourists.

Arrive at the pristine forests surrounding Koh Ker temple complex. We tour the outer palaces and Prasat Thorn, the main pyramid temple. After lunch, we spend a blissful afternoon exploring the ruins. There is nothing quite like a night in a remote Cambodian village. The sights and sounds, and an opportunity for cultural exchange over dinner at one of our jungle lodges.

Day 2 : Koh Ker Temple-Beng Mealea Temple-Siem Reap

Following a hearty breakfast, guests have the option to travel by motorbike to Phum Thmei, a nearby village four kilometres away, along a challenging track to see donated wells. Chat with local villagers and see their small gardens and local produce. The guide will explain the humanitarian programs that have been carried out here.

Beng Melea is always quieter in the afternoons, so we lunch here before exploring the ruins. This 11th century temple, thought to be a prototype of Angkor Wat, was used as a hunting lodge. From here, we are homeward bound through paddy fields and small roads.
